Planetary Camshaft Gear Train Hydraulic

Up

Gear-Train.

The gear-train type of gearbox is the most basic of all. It was found in many early excavators and bulldozers (tractors).

Many people reading this page will have built one of these gear sets using Mechano, Lego or similar construction toys.

The basic principle is that an input shaft has a small gear on it.

The small gear drives a large gear mounted on an adjacent shaft.
The secondary shaft either drives the machine directly or can feed several subsequent reduction stages.

Repairs:

These types of gearboxes are usually straightforward to work on.

Watch out for:

Bearing and shaft wear.
Chipped teeth
Bent or cracked casings.

Advantages / Disadvantages

This arrangement is very easy to understand and often requires few specialist tools
The casings on this type of gearbox are sometimes relatively thin and prone to damage.
The design produces large gearboxes.

If your gearbox is a large flattish arrangement its probably one of these.
